DANCE STUDENT DRESS CODE FOR JACKSON SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

Appropriate dance attire is very important so that instructors can see proper body alignment and body position and that movement is not restricted by clothing that is too tight.  Shoes that are appropriate and properly fitted for each type of dance are equally important.  Jeans are not appropriate dancewear for any class.

Ballet class: Students should wear any combination of leotard, unitard, and ballet skirt. Tights should always be worn.  Ballet shoes should be pink and should be regular leather or canvas material, not satin slippers.

Pointe class: Students should wear the same attire as listed under ballet class but will need pointe shoes in addition to their ballet shoes.

Jazz and Hip Hop class: Students should wear any combination of leotard, unitard, and/or dance pants, shorts or capris, and a small T-shirt or cami top. Tights or socks should always be worn for better fit of shoes.  Black jazz shoes should be worn for jazz or hip-hop or new tennis shoes only worn for dance class may be worn for hip-hop.  (Male students can wear a combination of a small T-shirt and pants or shorts but should wear pants that they can comfortably move in.) Students pants should not be dragging the floor or so low that they cannot move freely in them.

Tap class: Students should wear any combination of dancewear listed above and black tap shoes.

Creative movement class: Students should wear a combination of leotard, unitard, dance skirt, dance pants, or dance shorts and tights and pink ballet shoes.  Boys should wear black ballet shoes.

Color Guard: Students should wear shorts and tank top.  Socks are appropriate footwear.

Tumbling: Students should wear shorts and T-shirts.  Shorts should not have zippers or buttons and T-shirts should be capable of tucking into top of shorts.  Students may wear any combination of dancewear listed above but without tights. Soft soled dance or gymnastic shoes should be worn.

Hair:  All long hair must be worn in a ponytail, bun or braids for all classes.
